Last Line of Defense
Here's a new one. I was traveling through RDU a few weeks ago, going through the security check point. The woman in front of me was being held up because she was missing her left shoe. She had taken her shoes off, as required, and put them in the grey plastic bin and when she got to the other side, abracadabra, the left one was no where to be found. As usual, I was being held up as my cameras were selected for a random (yea, right) hand check, so I got to watch the entire episode. The TSA agents were checking the floor, the grey bins, under the machine, the other machines, and they even stopped the X-Ray machine as one of the agents crawled inside. No luck, no shoe. And this woman just sat in her chair waiting very patiently.
About 30 minutes later, as I was sitting by my gate, there was announcement over the PA requesting any passenger finding a black shoe to return it to the security.
